Born on February 12, 1937 in Qalat Salih, province of Al-Imara in the south of iraq. He grew up and went to school in Kirkuk in the north of Iraq. Poet, journalist, blogger, painter, graphical designer, translator and professor of journalism, computer-mediated communication and Internet at the University of Costa Rica.

He writes poetry in Arabic, English, German and Spanish. Since 1953, he has published numerous poems, short stories, translations, journalistic and academic articles in various media, countries and languages. In 1992 his epical poem “Iraq” (Arabic, 100 pages) was published by Riad El-Rayyes Books (London, Beirut). In 2005 he Published his collection “Embellecimiento después de mi nacimiento en Ur” (Beautification After My Birth at Ur – poems in Spanish with samples of poems in English, Arabic and German).

He taught journalism and communication at the International Institute of Journalism in Berlin, Germany, at the University of Algiers, Algeria, and since 1984 to the present at the University of Costa Rica. He has a Ph.D. in journalism and political science from Universität Leipzig, Germany.

He is core member of “The Kirkuk Group” and “Generation of the Sixties”, two of the most influential literary movements in Iraq and the Arab World since the sixties of the past century and until the present.

Due to his political activity against the despotic monarchy and later the republican military regimes, he was arrested in 1954 when he was still at high school and tried in a civilian court in Kirkuk. After the bloody military coup of February 8, 1963, he was arrested and tortured while he was studying painting at the University of Baghdad. He was detained for eight months and tried at the Fourth Military Tribunal in kirkuk. Due to these circumstances he was obliged to give up his studies at the university. In 1966, he was detained and kept in solitary confinement during one week at the General Directorate of Security in Baghdad.

After graduating from high school in 1955, he worked in oil drilling in the province of Kirkuk. It was a one year positive experience that marked his life. During the following years he worked as a teacher, journalist, graphic designer, calligrapher and translator in Baghdad until he left to Germany in 1968 where he earned his Ph.D. in journalism and political science from Universität Leipzig in 1997.

Later, he taught journalism and communication at the International Institute of Journalism in Berlin, Germany, at the University of Algiers, Algeria, and since 1984 to the present at the University of Costa Rica.

Prof. Dr. rer. pol. Anwar Al-Ghassani

Ich bin am 12.2.1937 in Qalat Saleh, Provinz Al-Imara, Irak, geboren. Nach Abschluß der Oberschule arbeitete ich zuerst bei der Iraq Petroleum Company (IPC) in Erdölproben, Bohrungen und Produktion in der Provinz von Kirkuk. Danach war ich als Dorflehrer und Oberschullehrer in Kirkuk tätig.

In 1962 began ich das Studium der Malerei an der Kunst-Akademie der Universität Bagdad. Ein Jahr später musste ich das Studium wegen politischer Verfolgung aufgeben.

Während der Jahre von 1964 bis 1968 lebte ich in Bagdad, wo ich als Graphiker, Vitrinengestalter, Journalist und Übersetzer arbeitete.

Ab 1968 studierte ich Journalistik an der Universität Leipzig, in der ich dann 1979 promovierte.

Ich habe Journalistik in Berlin und in Algerien gelehrt. Ich bin z.Z. Professor für Journalistik, Computer-vermittelte Kommunikation und Internet an der Hochschule für Massenkommunikationswissenschaften an der Universidad de Costa Rica.

Zwischen 2001 und 2003 war ich Direktor des Programs für Masterstudien in Kommunikation an der Universidad de Costa Rica.
Mein Hauptinteresse gilt der Poesie. Ich schreibe Gedichte in vier Spachen (Arabisch, Deutsch, Englisch und Spanisch) und habe Gedichte in verschiedenen Ländern und Sprachen veröffentlicht.

Mein episches Poem "Irak" ist 1993 im Verlag Riad El-Rayyes Books (London/Beirut) erschienen.

Anwar Al-Ghassani nació en Qalat Salih, provincia de Al-Imara en el sur de Irak en 1937. Creció y se educó en Kirkuk en el norte de Irak. Poeta, periodista, pintor, diseñador gráfico, traductor y catedrático de periodismo, comunicación mediada por computadora e Internet de la Universidad de Costa Rica.

Escribe poesía en árabe, ingles, alemán, y español. Desde 1953 ha publicado numerosos poemas, cuentos cortos, traducciones, artículos periodísticos y académicos en diversos medios, países e idiomas. En 1992 su poema épico “Irak” (árabe, 100 páginas) fue publicado por Riad El-Rayyes Books (London, Beirut). En 2005 publicó su colección “Embellecimiento después de mi nacimiento en Ur” (poemas en español y muestra de poemas en inglés, árabe y alemán).

Ha trabajado como profesor universitario en el Instituto Internacional de Periodismo en Berlín, Alemania, en la Universidad de Argel, Argelia, y desde 1984 y hasta el presente en la Universidad de Costa Rica. Tiene un doctorado en periodismo y ciencias políticas de la Universität Leipzig, Alemania.
Es miembro del núcleo del movimiento “Grupo de Kirkuk” y de “Generación de los Sesenta”, dos de los más influyentes movimientos literarios en Irak y el mundo árabe desde los años sesenta del siglo pasado y hasta hoy.

Por su actividad política contra la monarquía despótica y luego los regimenes republicanos militares fue arrestado en 1954 cuando era alumno de secundaria y procesado ante un tribunal civil en Kirkuk. En 1963 fue arrestado y torturado después del sangriento golpe militar del 8 de febrero mientras estudiaba pintura en la Universidad de Bagdad. Fue detenido por ocho meses y procesado ante el Cuarto Tribunal Militar de Kirkuk. A raíz de estas circunstancias fue obligado a dejar el estudio. En 1966 fue detenido de nuevo e incomunicado por una semana en una celda individual en el Directorado General de Seguridad en Bagdad.
Después de graduarse del colegio en 1955 trabajó en la perforación de pozos de petróleo en la provincia de Kirkuk, una experiencia positiva que marcó su vida. En los años siguiente trabajó como maestro y como periodista, diseñador gráfico, caligráfico y traductor en Bagdad. Ha trabajado como profesor universitario en el Instituto Internacional de Periodismo en Berlín, Alemania, en la Universidad de Argel, Argelia, y desde 1984 y hasta el presente en la Universidad de Costa Rica. Tiene un doctorado en periodismo y ciencias políticas de la Universität Leipzig, Alemania.
